Sadie Sharpe Obituary

Sadie Lee Sharpe was born on October 11, 1927 in Fayette TN., to the late William Jefferson and Josephine Simmons. Sadie was the second oldest of 13 children. Sadie grew up in Memphis TN., where she accepted Christ at Mount Sinai Baptist Church. She attended school at Old Greenwood Elementary and Hampton high school. While in High School Sadie was a majorette and part of the band. While growing up Sadie was called Dirty Red, a nickname she got from Big Mama and it stuck with her through the years. Dirty Red always had to have her way and was spoiled by everyone including her siblings who used to take punishments for her. Dirty Red met Martin L King while she was young and everybody thought they would be together and married. But when Sadie met Lonnie C. Sharpe he swept her off her feet and that was the end of her and Martin, she made a statement “the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice and that's when the magic started. Dirty Red later married Lonnie C. Sharpe in 1946. During this time sadie found out she was pregnant with her first child so she moved to Chicago with her sister Bernice. She ended up having 5 children and finally moved to San Diego in 1952 where she had 8 more children.

Sadie was a strong, independent, hard working woman who raised 13 children after her husband Lonnie passed. Sadie later met her longtime friend Daniel White. While raising her children Sadie worked as a housekeeper and later found a job at Balboa Hospital. Sadie enjoyed traveling, going to the horse races and highlights in Tijuana. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo, keno and the machines but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. In 1994 she moved to Las Vegas and she traveled back and forth because San Diego was her real home. Finally in 2014 she made the permanent move to Las Vegas where she lived her remaining years.

Sadie was called home on October 16, 2020 at 12:56 pm. She was preceded in death by her husband Lonnie, 5 of her children: Lonnie Jr., Robert, Tyrone, Ernie, Jackie and 2 of her brothers Sidney and William. She left her mark and memory on this earth by leaving behind her eight children, Carol, Clifford, Maurice, Linda, Vi, McRay, Fennie and Raymond. She also had two daughter-in-law’s Frenchie, and Rosalyn and two son-in-law’s Kelley and Kirby. 10 sisters and brothers, Bernice, Helen, LaGreta, Versie, Sonnie, James, Freddy, Anthony, Thelma, Velma.
