Melvin Kinsler Obituary

Melvin Octavius Kinsler was the last child (11th) to the union of Furman and Iola Kinsler born on January 20th, 1945, in High Point, North Carolina.  He graduated from William Penn High school in 1964.  Melvin joined the US Navy in 1965 and relocated to San Diego, Ca.  He served for 22 years working in Aviation Ordnance, Military Police and Maintenance Engineering.  At which time he was dubbed the name “Poky” because he took his time and walked so slow.  He also fought in the Vietnam war and the Gulf war - Operation Desert Storm. Upon retiring from the military in 1991, he worked for the San Diego School District, Price Entities, now known as Price Philanthropies.  He also attended San Diego City College where he received his associate’s degree.

Melvin was a carefree, loving, devoted, God Fearing husband and father.  He was a man of strength and kindness.  A keen sense of humor that always kept everyone laughing.  If he met a stranger, he became their friend almost immediately. He was a man of incredible character, unwavering integrity with a no-nonsense demeanor. He was well respected in his jobs, in the community and church. Melvin was resilient, intelligent and always reminded everyone to do right unto others.  He was a believer of God, and his favorite quote was “God’s got me”!   His favorite pastimes were to travel, sing in the church choir, grill at home, dance, watch football and his favorite westerns, and sleep. All of which was done with a toothpick in his mouth.
When the Lord called Melvin, he was ready to go. He never complained about his illness or pain, and always said “I’m good!” Melvin fought the good fight, and he transitioned to heaven Wednesday morning, November 6, 2024.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Bevolan Sonja Kinsler, his children Marilyn Marble, Marcus White (Lynnae), Robert White (Zonna), Marsha White, Sherrell Kinsler-Morehead (Will), Melanie Rodriguez Kinsler, Justin Kinsler, Dauntrell Kinsler (Kiara) and Bonus Children, Samuel Jones, KaLecia Martin, Crystal Johnson and Jasmine Robinson (Darnell). He has numerous nieces and nephews, 29 Grand Children and a host of great children.

He leaves 3 living siblings. Flossie Little – High Point, North Carolina, Furnell Weaver – Capitol Heights, Maryland and Nathaniel Kinsler – High Point, North Carolina. Preceding him in death are Furman Kinsler, Marion McGill, Richard Kinsler, Sarah Lovett, Buela McCoy, Mary Frances Alba, and Roosevelt Kinsler.
Melvin was loved by many from all walks of life, who he impacted and all shared joyful memories.  Whether you call him Melvin, Octavius, Poky or Dad, his spirit was as strong as his love for his family, and his dedication to all of us was evident in every action he took. He will be truly missed.
