Lula Lindsay Obituary

Lula Mae Lindsay of Southampton County, VA, born February 26, 1933, the last of twelve children of Rueben and Mariah Wellons. Received her formal education in Portsmouth, VA, she spent her youth working in the family dry cleaning business. A devoted Baptist, she attended the family church where her father served as deacon. She met and married George B. Lindsay, locating to Lemoore, California.

She later moved to San Diego, CA, reuniting with her sister’s Mary Lee Robertson and Vera Wellons. Raising her five children, and always a mother first, Lula’s love blossomed even more when her family increased by five boys, who she lovingly and proudly called her sons. She continued her career in the dry-cleaning industry, as a civilian with the Naval Training Center in San Diego, where she retired after 25 years.

Lula enjoyed cooking for family gatherings, making her specialty dishes such as ribs, potato salad, baked beans, collard greens, yams, and her children’s two favorite dishes, corn bread (they called cake) and peach cobbler. Her grandchildren would have the pleasure of enjoying her three-layer cakes, every evening after dinner. She also enjoyed time with her friends, going on many turnaround bus trips to Las Vegas. She was an avid BINGO player. Knowing where all the best bingo halls were.

She was called home to glory on Monday, March 29, 2021. Preceded in death by both of her parents, six sisters, Edith Hick, Lenora Nichols, Emma Washington, Mary Lee Robertson, Vera Wellons, and Gladys (Pig) Warren; five brothers, Ernest Wellons, Rueben Wellons, Jr., William C. Wellons, Jack Wellons, Quentin Wellons and two sons who preceded her in death Gregory, and Theodore (Ted
