Joyce Ann Spicer was born on June 10, 1944 to Roscoe and Marie Eddington. Early in life she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in Mexia, Texas. She attended and proudly graduated from Woodland High School as the class Valedictorian. She later moved to San Diego, California where she met and married James Spicer Sr. over 60 years ago; together they have (3) three children. Joyce was a member of Community Missionary Baptist Church in San Diego, California for many years. She was a faithful choir member, and was known for her solo song “Old Time Religion.” She was dedicated while serving as the Pastor’s Aide President and Black History Program Coordinator. She also supported and coordinated the church mission with church rummage sales, and represented the State of Texas at the Church State Rally emphasizing that “everything in Texas is big.” In her later years, she visited Lake Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Lake Elsinore, California with her daughter and son-in-law as her health allowed. Joyce worked in many capacities including working and retiring from AT&T after 30 years. She also attended San Diego City College. She later became a caregiver along with being a successful and proud Avon representative. Joyce was a shining example of an earthly angel gently leading and guiding her family and friends in the Christian way of life. She would give the best advice and was always able to back it up with a scripture from the Bible. She was a beacon of light for anyone who interacted with her. On January 21, 2025, Joyce, affectionately known as Grandma to her grandkids, was called home. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents: Roscoe and Marie Eddington; siblings: Noma Barton, Mary Barnett, Mattie Boyd, Helen Carroll, Armagay Eddington, Jean Eddington, Willie Eddington, and Arizona Hicks; son: Nathan Spicer; and bonus sons: Daniel Spicer and James Spicer Jr. Joyce left to cherish her memory, her husband: James Spicer Sr.; children: Robbin Duplessis (John) and Darren Spicer Sr.; and bonus children: Melinda Currin, Darchelle Hanson, and Jackie Spicer; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
