Jorge Gonzalez Obituary

With heavy hearts, the family announces the passing of a beloved father, who peacefully departed after a courageous 16-year journey with Alzheimer's disease. While the illness slowly stole memories, it never diminished the love shared with family.

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he left the island at just 16 years old to build a better life in New York City. A humble, hardworking, and largely self-taught man, he spent years working aboard tuna fishing fleets, traveling the world and visiting places many only dream of seeing. Throughout life, he earned many affectionate nicknames—from "Salsa" for a love of music and dancing, to "Cook" for incredible culinary talent, and later "Don Jorgi," a name reflecting the respect and admiration earned from those around him.

He was a man of quiet strength, humility, and grace. Though a man of few words, actions spoke volumes. A remarkable sense of humor, a warm smile, and a generous heart touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Above all else, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, family member, and friend. Character, love, and guidance shaped the lives of those closest to him. Alzheimer's may have taken memories, jokes, laughter, and the ability to do the things once loved, but it could never take away the love shared with family or the legacy left behind.

That legacy will continue through lives lived with the same humility, resilience, and kindness that defined him.

There is comfort in imagining him back where he was happiest—out at sea, with the boats dearly loved. There is also peace in believing a joyful reunion has taken place with loved ones who went before him. Until we meet again, may the door remain open.

To a beloved Papi: his children are incredibly proud to call him Father. Thank you for a lifetime of love, sacrifice, and unwavering example. Love will continue to guide those left behind, and memory will live on forever.

Nos vemos después. Te quiero mucho, Pa. En paz descanses.
