On March 5, 1936 in Fairmont, West Virginia Louise and Mitchell Britton were blessed with the birth of their first-born son Howard E Britton. The oldest of eight children Howard grew up in West Virginia, raised up in the Church of God and Christ. He received his formal education at Dunbar High School in Fairmont, where he played basketball, football, and other sports. He decided to join the US Navy and not continue to work as a cool miner.
Howard met and married Theresa Cooper in high school. In August 1955 there married and he was off to boot camp. Then the journey began Pax River, MD, to Florida and then Albany, Ga. We then we stationed in Rota, Spain, and Hawaii, finally settling in San Diego, CA.
Howard loved the Navy. He was able to travel and see the world, while stationed aboard three different aircraft carriers. During his time in the Navy, he moved up the ranks.
After being in San Diego for six years, Howard and Theresa decided no more moving. They would settle in San Diego and call it home. Howard retired from the US Navy in 1980 after 25 years of service. He then went on to work for North Island until retiring from there in 1995.
Once retired he spent his time on the golf course, working on his many Volkswagens and spending time with his family. He was a huge San Diego Charger fan and was always watching Tiger Woods. One of his biggest joys were spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Howard smile was infectious, and he could make anyone laugh.
