Deacon Floyd Lee Flagg, Sr. was born April 21, 1937, to the parents of Farris and Rosa Flagg in Crawfordville, GA. Floyd was the 5th of 12 children. His father Farris moved to Cincinnati Ohio in 1946 for a better life for his family.
Floyd joined the United States Navy, in March 1956. After completion of Boot Camp, he was assigned to and completed Machinist Mate school. During his military career he completed 5 tours abroad.
Floyd honorable and dedicated military career of 22 years as a Machinist Mate Petty Officer, 1st Class in the United States Navy, included tours during the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean War Service Medal and several good conduct medals.
On April 1963, Floyd met the love of his life, Verneka Loretta Smith, while stationed at the US Military Commissary Store in Key West, Florida. They were married July 18, 1964. They remained married for 52 years until God saw fit to call Verneka home.
Floyd was passionate about his Christian walk. He manifested his dedication and deep love for his church by serving as deacon at New Life Baptist Church located in Spring Valley California and under the leadership of Pastor Troy Owens. During his long service as a deacon, he sung with the Men's Chorus, served as an usher on the outreach ministry, and he was always willing to help any ministry or auxiliary of the church whenever possible. Additionally, Floyd often volunteered to help feed the homeless during the holidays at the Salvation Army and the Harbor City Church on 16th and Island Avenue in San Diego.
Floyd was preceded by his wife of 52 years Verneka Flagg, his parents Farris E. and Rose Mae Flagg, Siblings, Emma Flagg, Rosa Lee Flagg, Betty Ruth Flagg, Johnny Flagg, Adolphus Flagg, Robert Flagg, Henry Flagg, and Roger Flagg. Floyd is survived by his children Regena (Kim) Heinrich, Malcolm Flagg, Dolores (Steven) Smith, Floyd Lee Flagg, Jr., Farris Flagg and Jeffery (Carla) Flagg. Grandchildren, Darnelle (Annie) Melvin, Verneka (Erik) Strom, Joshua (Michaela) Heinrich, and Madeline Heinrich. Great grandchildren, Lily Strom, Erik Strom, Jr., Simone Melvin, Miriam Heinrich, Olivia Heinrich, and several nieces and nephews in Cleveland and Cincinnati, Ohio.
