Doris Harris Obituary

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

Doris Mae Amos Harris was born November 02, 1930 in Greenville, Mississippi to the late Ben and Earnestine Amos. She was the second of the twelve Amos children. Two sisters, Thurlene Reed and Mildred Hopson and three brothers, James Orell, Ben and Herman Amos, all of whom preceded her in death. At the time of her transition, she resided at the Ramona Rehabilitation & Care Center in Hemet, California.

Doris was educated in the Greenville Public Schools in Washington County, Mississippi. She married the late Marvin Harris in 1948. Prior to moving to San Diego in 1969, she worked in many homes in Greenville, Mississippi.

Doris was mother to eight children, (two of whom preceded her in death, Debra Louise Coleman and Cordell Harris). Two grandchildren preceded her in death: Myah Sade Green, and Cordell Harris, Jr., whom she loved and often cared for in her home. She later adopted two sisters, Ayana and Leah. She worked hard, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children. She always had food on the stove or in the oven. Children and grandchildren lovingly called her “Bowie,” a name given to her by her youngest son, Patrick. All of her children, grands, sisters, brothers, and people who knew her have many fun memories about times with her.

Doris accepted Christ during her early years in Greenville and remained a devout Christian throughout her life, joining the Church of Christ in San Diego, California where she moved in 1969. Doris loved God; she loved her children, grandchildren, her family and people in general. She demonstrated her love for children by caring for grandchildren and foster children. After over twenty years of service as a surrogate and foster mother to many children in San Diego, she retired in 2001.

Doris leaves to celebrate her legacy four (4) sons: Charles Harris and Carey Keith Harris of San Diego, California; Ronnie Harris (Angela), Loganville, Georgia; Patrick Harris (Sharon) of Murrieta, California; four daughters: Jacqueline Harris, Minden, Louisiana; Nadine Harris, San Diego, California; and Ayana and Leah Harris; four sisters: Gloria Manning and Carolyn Gibbs Coats (Jesse), Greenville, Mississippi; Velma Guy, Dallas, Texas; Barbara Nash, California; one sister-in-law: Charlesetta Amos, New Britain Connecticut; two brothers: Titus Amos (Edna) and Curtis Amos (Christine), Greenville, Mississippi; and her loving grandchildren: Andrea M. Bryant (Clarence), Minden, Louisiana; Nicole Harris Aparicio , Shawn Harris, Corey Harris, and Carolyn Harris, San Diego, California; Mark Harris, Topeka; Kansas, Sheliah Harris, Atlanta, Ronnie Harris and Ryan Harris, Athens, Georgia; Donnie Richards of Brawley, California; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins across the United States.
