Tonya Brooks Dubose Obituary

Tonya Anita Brooks DuBose, daughter of the late Thomas Leroy Brooks and Gwendolyn Louise Brooks Thompson, was born on March 4, 1969 in Baltimore, Maryland. She is the older sister to her only sibling Winter Navidad Brooks.

When Tonya was a mere one years old, her family moved from Baltimore to San Diego, CA.  She received her elementary and primary education in San Diego, and graduated from Morse Senior High. Tonya received her degree in nursing and studied at Southwestern University.  She became a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked in the field of nursing for over 17 years. She was employed through Vibra Healthcare and also worked at Sharp and Kaiser hospitals. Tonya was also a Nursing Instructor at Western Medical Training Center.
Tonya was a strong-willed woman who loved her family very much, she was a single mom while raising her oldest son Mychaquell Richard David Shields. Mychaquell gave Tonya the honor of being a grandmother to son, Masen King Messiah Shields.

While at work one day, Tonya met and fell in love with Kenneth Donald DuBose. They married and were blessed with sons, Kensai Amari Nathan DuBose and Kenyen Elijah Matteo DuBose.
Tonya had a special bond with her father Thomas Brooks. They loved sports and they would discuss what team would win the Superbowl for any given year.  They shared a friendly competition, since Tonya was a fan of the San Diego, Chargers and her father, Thomas loved the Baltimore, Ravens.
Tonya was a good friend to many; generous with her time and always willing to help anyone that might need it, not thinking of herself and very confidant that she was able to impact the lives of many. Her goal was to make others feel confident in themselves and building their self-esteem toward success in their lives. She was a true fighter, always staying positive and overcoming so many obstacles.
She became the team mom for her two youngest sons with the El Cajon Falcons. You could hear her among the crowd cheering “EC, You Know” at every game she could attend. She was a loving and a caring parent who would do anything and everything to help her sons' football teams and boxing career.  Where her boys were, SHE was, and she wouldn’t hesitate to tell her children exactly what was on her mind when it came to pointing them in the right direction and what was best for them in the now and the future. Her 4 boys, (grandson included) were the absolute light of her life.
Tonya was also an entrepreneur and was very fond of traveling...so much so that she became a Travel Specialist at Prophecy Travel hosted by Traverus Global. Tonya always stated "I'm a woman of faith. I am a survivor. I am a Mother. I am an Entrepreneur. I am successful. I am worthy”.  Indeed, she was all the above.
On the afternoon of Friday, October 5, 2018, God saw fit to call Tonya to Heaven and receive her wings of life. Left to cherish her memory is husband, Kenneth DuBose; three sons, Mychaquell Shields, Kensai and Kenyen DuBose; one grandson, Masen Shields; mother and step-father, Gwendolyn and Scott Thompson; and sister, Winter N. Brooks, Step-mom, DeVoch Brooks, mother-in-law, Linda DuBose; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law; and host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends
