Roddy Darnell Phillips

Roddy Darnell Phillips the beloved son of Otha and Clara Phillips.  He was born on July 27, 1959 and departed his adventure with us in this lifetime on December 21, 2018.  Roddy was a humble person with a big heart and a big smile to match.   Roddy was always true to himself and to others, indeed, what you saw was what you got. 

 Roddy attended various schools in San Diego and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School.  After graduation, he became a member of the Laborers International Union, Local 89, working in commercial construction for twelve years.  However, as his health began to fail, he was eventually forced into early retirement. 

Roddy’s favorite hobbies included a competitive game of dominoes, spades, or bid wiz, watching football games, fishing trips and backyard barbequing.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, whether barbequing, telling jokes or partaking in his many other hobbies.  Roddy was always the life of the party wherever he went, making sure that everyone was enjoying themselves and having a good time.

Roddy considered his three children the greatest blessing of his life, and his role as their father as the most gratifying experience, which became even more joyful upon the arrival of his first grandchild. 

Throughout his life, Roddy was blessed with many great relationships; however, none was greater than the relationship he shared with his devoted mother, Clara.  Their bond was incredibly strong.  He often spoke of her constant support, encouragement and unconditional love as being the inspiration which made so many things possible for him, and he loved her dearly. 

Roddy was preceded in death by his father, Otha Phillips and his grandparents.

Roddy leaves to cherish his memory: beloved mother, Clara Phillips; children: Roddy Phillips Jr., Adeshia Coffey, and Clara Phillips;  grandson, Quintez Gibbs; one uncle, Bobby Phillips (and his wife Darlene); four aunts, Dorothy Murphy (and her husband James Arthur), Johnette Phillips, Melba Jones (Richmond, CA), Fannie Jones (Berkeley, CA); and a host of other relatives and friends who will mourn his passing yet cherish many fond memories. 

Roddy will be forever missed by those who had the privilege of loving him.  He will be especially missed by those who had the honor of being loved by him
