Concepcion Elacio, who is better known as Nanay Conching and Tia Conching to most of us was born on July 3, 1927 at Sinabacan, Candelaria, Zambales, Philippines. Her mother was Elena Echon Ebilane and her father was Maximo Fedalizo Cleto. All 5 siblings were all dead, Meciang, Simon, Jovino, Rosita and Merlina. The only surviving sibling is Salina Ebilane Malay. Her husband was Marino Barrera Elacio (deceased) and has 5 children namely Ricardo (deceased), Leonides, Rodolfo (deceased), Cresencia and Amor. She has 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
During the early age, she was maid to prominent family in our town acting as baby sitters, cook, etc. Even without formal school training, she learned how to read and write thru the help Auntie, well known to be Papo Arit to all of us. She really helps her lot reading the Cartilla and practicing her match skills.
As she grows old and become spouse to our father, she become well known to be Conching (the fish vendor). In Zambal rigatoni nin kona. She was very industrious, honest, very patient, helpful and down to earth friendly and was a friend to all. With her perseverance and hard work, she was able to send her children to school and most were was able to attain college degrees.
In the early 1980’s, she migrated her in United States and live with her favorite “manuyang” Nieves. She acted as babysitters to her grandchildren and kids of family relatives and friends. To the children, she is Nanay Conching, their Papo, Lola, Indo and Yaya.
